Ages 3-4
Children this age do understand magic and love to be helpers! I keep it simple, colorful and sweet. Plumes and scarves that change color are a big hit with this crowd, as are songs and stories with magic. My realistic magic raccoon puppet comes along, and the children get to pet and “feed” him.
Ages 5-7
Children this age really love magic! And they REALLY want to participate. I do slightly more complicated routines with lots and lots of audience participation. They are good at following instructions, so the magic even happens right in their hands!
Ages 8-11
This is a tougher crowd. They’re wiser and aren’t easily fooled. But they still love good magic! For this age group I cut out the little kid stuff and do many of the tricks I perform in adult shows, introducing card and coin magic, and mind reading. I’ll usually teach them a little magic, too. It’s a challenge to win them over. Many magicians won’t work with older kids, but I enjoy them just as much as the younger ones.
Mixed Ages
It’s perhaps the toughest challenge of all, but I perform at many multi-generational family events so I’m faced with it all the time. I aim for the middle ground, with something for everybody. I choose tricks that are universally appealing--colorful, visual and easily-followed, yet baffling to children and adults alike!
